Never Skip Meals!!
Never Skip Meals: Understanding Hypoglycemia in Small Breed Puppies
One of the most important things new puppy parents should understand is that small breed and toy breed puppies should never go long periods without eating. Because of their tiny size, puppies have very little energy reserve. Missing meals, stress, travel, excessive play, illness, or a major change in routine can sometimes cause blood sugar levels to drop too low, this is known as hypoglycemia.
Hypoglycemia can become serious very quickly, especially in toy breed puppies.
Common Signs of Low Blood Sugar in Puppies
Watch for:
Unusual tiredness or lethargy
Weakness
Shaking or trembling
Difficulty standing or walking
Acting “off” or unusually quiet
Lack of interest in food
Glassy eyes
Disorientation or confusion
Wobbliness
Collapse
Seizures in severe cases
If your puppy suddenly becomes weak, unresponsive, or appears unstable, this should be treated as an emergency!
Prevention Is Key!
To help prevent hypoglycemia:
Feed meals on a consistent schedule
Never intentionally skip meals
Monitor food intake closely during the first few days at home
Limit excessive activity until your puppy is adjusted
Keep a puppy-safe energy supplement available if recommended by your veterinarian
Make sure children understand that puppies need regular rest periods and meal times
When in Doubt, Act Quickly
If your puppy refuses food, appears weak, or is showing signs of low blood sugar, contact your veterinarian immediately.
At Puppy La Vie, we encourage every family to become familiar with the signs of hypoglycemia before bringing home a toy breed puppy. Early recognition and prompt veterinary care can make a significant difference.
A tiny puppy’s biggest job is simple: eat, sleep, play, and grow. Making sure they continue eating regularly is one of the most important responsibilities of new puppy ownership.
